Why isn’t the Super Bowl a Superbowl?

Downtown Indy Two Nights Ago
Day Five of Fourteen:
Compound words are two words that can standalone or come together to make another word.  And there are lots of them.  BUT, there are no straightforward (yes that is a compound word too) rules for their formation.
Highschool, not high school … that’s one that I think should be a compound word and one that for years I would write incorrectly. I mean why is it that videogame and rainbow and horseback are correct but highschool is not?
And why is it that football is correct but superbowl is not?
Well, whatever the reason(s), if there are any, I must have missed that lesson somewhere along the road … still, since it’s never too late for an old dog to learn something new, if you think you have the answer to the compound word mystery please, would you let me know.
That’s all for today … Go Giants!! (Sorry Patriot fans but since I live in Indy I have to support a Manning)

If one word describes the other they are separate. Foot does not describe the ball, it is the type of ball a football. High defines the tyoe of school and is separate much like elementryschool is separated. The NFL championship is a “bowl” game like the Rose Bowl or the Fiesta Bowl. It is the bowl of all bowl games…a “Super” Bowl.

That's my explaination and I'm sticking to it!
