You know it’s funny … the last time I was an airport with my children – and for that matter, the last time I traveled any distance that took longer than two hours with them, the only thing that concerned their pretty little minds was where the closest electrical outlet was (so they could charge their iPhones) or whether or not I – yes, I – remembered to bring the car charger.
I know. I can hear the cynics … but I don’t care. Really. I’m not big into pointing out sheep along the side of the road or demanding a sing along to the likes of Jimmy Crack Corn and I Don’t Care …
SIDEBAR: What the hell does that mean anyway? What does Jimmy Crack Corn care about exactly?
Although, come to think of it, I was fairly disappointed in my 13-year old’s reaction when I pointed out the Pentagon as we flew just slightly off to the right of the impressive building. Of course she doesn’t have a full understanding of what goes on there so maybe, in her defense, that’s why she didn’t really care – not that I have a full understanding of what all goes on there either, but still, it’s the Pentagon. Throw me a bone someone!
Moving on, when I’m at the airport and I look around and see all the people, the last thing I want to do is be a number … you will not – unless I’m on a deadline – catch me pounding my keyboard or surfing the web or talking waaayyyy to loud on my phone to Aunt Jeanie about Uncle Richard’s gallbladder problem … No. I like to people watch – who doesn’t? But I also like to make up stories, the best I can, about why that person is at the airport in the first place. Are they traveling for pleasure? Taking that vacation of a lifetime that they saved and saved for? Or are they traveling for work, or even due to a tragedy in their life.
And then, when I imagine their reason for being at the airport, I am reminded that all around us there is joy, there is humdrum there is heartbreak … and I am reminded how lucky I am to be a part of this crazy, hectic world … and I don’t care anymore that my children’s phones are fully charged and mine is dead : )
