The Day My Gold Card Betrayed Me

Barista handing a coffee to a customer in a busy café

One day, in the not-so-distant past, I was running exceptionally late for an appointment — the kind of late where you have four minutes to spare and absolutely no business stopping anywhere. But caffeine is a non‑negotiable, so I parked, jumped out, and speed‑walked in heels (which should count as a sport) straight into the happiest place on Earth: Starbucks.

I ordered my drink from friendly barista #1, handed my Gold card to friendly barista #2, and then heard the words no caffeine‑deprived woman wants to hear:

“You owe an additional $2.32.”

Excuse me? Not possible. I have a Gold card. It cannot be empty. (Internal screaming commences.)

ME: “Oh… well, OK then. I only brought my card in. I can run back to the car.”

Friendly barista #1 slides my drink toward me anyway. “It’s already made. No reason to throw it away when you can have it.”

Friendly barista #2 smiles. “No worries — you come in here every day.”

(Yes. I do. It’s my vice. In more ways than one.)

I smiled. I breathed. And I vowed to return the favor the next day to some other unorganized soul sprinting through life on caffeine and hope.

Sometimes the nicest thing someone can do is remind you that kindness still exists — even when your Gold card is empty.

“Fate is nothing but the deeds committed in a prior state of existence.”~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

If this spoke to you, be sure to “like” and share it over social with someone who’d appreciate the flavor …
