Learn to Use Your Inner Voice for Good

A mystical genie appears from a golden lamp to a hopeful woman

I’m a talker — not with strangers, not with coworkers, not with the poor grocery clerk who’s just trying to ring up my asparagus. My real conversations happen with the little voices in my head. I call them my genies. They don’t grant wishes, but they do hand out some pretty solid advice.

They’ve talked me off ledges when I felt like the world was against me. They’ve nudged me toward the harder thing when the easier thing would’ve been fine. They remind me to slow down, zoom out, and pay attention to what actually matters.

Take this morning. I woke up behind the eight ball, twenty minutes late, already annoyed at myself. I could’ve cut my run short at four miles, but one of my genies whispered, “You’ll be happier if you finish what you started.” So, I did the full five.

Later, another genie chimed in while I was tempted to drive like a bat out of hell to make an early meeting. “You’ll get there three minutes faster,” it said, “but you’ll miss the sunrise — and possibly end up in a ditch.” So I slowed down. I watched the sky change colors in my rearview mirror. I arrived on time, intact, and weirdly proud of myself.

Funny thing? Everyone else was late. So, me and my genies had a quiet moment, a cup of coffee, and a sunrise from the fourth floor.

So, here’s my advice for all you young ones out there: find your genies and fire the monsters. Find the inner voice that wants the best for you — not the loudest one, not the meanest one, not the one that narrates your insecurities like it’s auditioning for a documentary. Find the voice that pushes you toward the life you actually want.

Me … I love my genies. But no, I won’t share … you need to find your own … they’re there. I promise. You just need to believe.

Clearly, I love a good inner monologue … although a tête-à-tête is good too … if for nothing else, it’s fun to say : )
