I woke up this morning all snug and content — truly thriving — and then, like that god‑forsaken holiday song no one wants to hear even once, my brain flipped a switch and started sprinting. Stress level: catastrophic. Mood: plummeting. And honestly, I should’ve known better, because this always happens before my first cup.
See, I should be writing about coffee, not my insecurities. Because today is National Coffee Day, and if I’m being honest, I don’t know how I’d exist without the stuff. When I order a cappuccino and the barista makes foam so deep and thick a tiny elf could ice skate on it, I’m happy. My whole mood resets. My nervous system exhales. But when I’m handed a cup topped with sad little bubbles that disappear in five seconds? Yeah… that also sets my mood. Just not in the “I’m a stable adult” direction.
Over the years, I’ve made some solid friends behind the espresso bar — people who know exactly how I like it and never disappoint. (I’m talking about coffee here, people. I know what that sounded like.)
Anyway, if today ends up even half as chaotic as my brain was when I woke up, it’ll be one for the record books. Or CNN. But the good news? I’m out of bed, caffeinated, and already on cup number two. And if any relationship has taught me who I am — needy, foam‑specific, and emotionally regulated by espresso — it’s this one.
Oh, and happy National Coffee Day : )
