Why Disney Needs to Make a REAL Cowboy Movie

“Dream as if you will live forever; Live as if you will die today.”  ~ James Dean

I’m not a huge movie person. Don’t get me wrong, I like movies … but not the way some people do. Truth be known, I’d be just fine if I lived somewhere that didn’t have a theater. Because, like I said, I’m just not much of a movie person. But, when I was growing up … like before I hit my Valley Girl stage … I did watch a few movies over and over and over again. And no, they weren’t anything Disney produced. I mean who wants to watch animals that talk and who really cares about princesses that are incapable of saving themselves? (I mean why does it always have to be a prince??)

When I was little, Rooster Cogburn was my all-time fav movie. John Wayne reminded me of someone who I thought walked on water … someone who, whether he knew it or not (I mean I was only a little girl), was my hero and truth be known, always will be. I also loved Shane and High Noon and, Giant—especially, Giant. I love the gumption Elizabeth Taylor’s character had … and of course, I loved James Dean. I thought Jet Rink was God’s gift to the world. Truly. He was mysterious, deep, troubled … both on camera, and as it turned out, in real life too.

BUT. Come to think of it … maybe it’s not that I’m not a big fan of movies … maybe it’s more that the types of movies I like (other than Maleficent, but that’s a topic for another day) just aren’t as easy to come by anymore? Maybe, the reason I never really cared for Disney (again, except for Maleficent and maybe the Little Mermaideven if she does get saved by a prince) is because there’s never any cowboys in them … maybe, if the girl could get saved by a tall, dark and handsome man wearing shit kickers, jeans and a flannel … maybe I’d be more of a Disney fan. Maybe.

Sixty-five years ago, James Dean lost his life in an automobile accident. He was only 24-years old. And though he’s not the hero of my life, his work absolutely shaped the way I think and feel about some things … let alone, about life.

“Forgive quickly, kiss slowly, love truly, laugh uncontrollably and never regret anything that makes you smile.”  ~ James Dean
